Neuromancer

Posted in Research

NeuromancerJust finished William Gibson’s cyberpunk masterpiece, Neuromancer. This was a first time for me and I loved it. The novel covers artificial intelligence, virtual reality, genetic engineering, and of course multinational corporations overpowering the traditional nation-state of the future. Written in 1984, this book was WAY ahead of it’s time and a recommended read for anyone who hasn’t yet. A quick glance at the cover should give you an idea of the awesomeness of its contents.

I really need to pick that one back up. I think I still have a copy around somewhere….

I would also recommend “Snow Crash” by Neal Stephenson. It deals with similar issues in a future that’s maybe not quite so bleak as Gibson’s but focuses in a lot on human consciousness and how it potentially relates to programing and social engineering. Also the main character’s name is Hiro Protagonist, a hacker, samurai swordsman, and pizza-delivery driver so you know the awesome is turned up to 11 from the get-go.

I read that one a few years back and really liked it. I then tried to read Kryptonomicon but only made it half way through.
